History: Todd was born in April 1985 to Mr. & Mrs. Everett Tolansky, and for the first seven years of his life was a normal, if overly-energetic child. When he was in the first grade, however, he remembers being called out of class. His Father had just died of a sudden heart attack. Because his father was an illegal immigrant, there were no survivors benefits or insurance money and his family rapidly spiraled into poverty and the state welfare system.
Todd began acting out in class, and move in and out of special Ed. When his older brothers move out Todds mother rents out their rooms and his grades start slipping again, and well intentioned guidance counsellors recommend that he changes schools to get a fresh start. Unfortunately, the school he is sent to is nicknamed "Slacker High", and knowing this and having lost his old school friends only makes him resentful and even more distrustful of authority figures.
At 12 his skin takes on a greenish tint: doctors were puzzled by it but say its natural and is not harmful. With this change and no authority figures at home he starts a long painful slide. He begins picking fights, shoplifting, and was caught vandalizing his school wth grafitti and by discharging fire extinguishers.
Eventually he is sent off to live with his Uncle Lech in the small town of Bayville. For the next year and a half Lech fills his schedule with every sort of activity that can be imagined, and hires a private tutor to get Todd back into regular classes. Despite this, however, while Todd does improve behaviorally and academically, the relationship between the two of them is cool and emotionally distant.
In 1999 his uncle Lech runs into hard times and with his business foundering he can no longer afford the activities and tutoring which had filled Todds life. With nothing to do now except for school, life gets boring fast and once again he slides into mischief.
During this time Todds powers start manifesting, and he quickly became a social outcast, just barely keeping out of serious trouble. During this time he begans to seriously work out to fend off assorted head bashers.
When Todd was just turning 16 Lech's business started foundering, and in an attempt to save himself he got caught up in a money laundering scandel. Todd once again started to act out, this time causing a bus accident while trying to impress a classmate who complained about his body oder. Only the timely intervention of two other mutants (Scott and Jean from the X-Men Evo comic book issue 1) kept him from a disabling injury, although he still needed hospitalization.
Lech was distraught over the accident, but he confessed to Todd in the hospital room that he was equally distraught over the expected hospital bill and his propects for being sent to prison for fraud.
Mystique had been told about Todds unusual abilities through a friend who worked at the hospital, and she was listening outside when this happened. Over the following month, she became friendly with Lech, explaining that she was a long lost neice on Todds' grandmothers' side. His grandmother Marie had left Poland in 1936 and thought her family lost during the war. Mystique explained that she had only recently discovered their connection while going through documents that were part of her mother's estate in Dresden, Germany, detailing how Marie's brother had survived the war, married, given birth to her now deceased mother, and had been forced to leave Poland along with all other German nationals in the late 1940's, only to settle in East Germany. When the wall came down Mystique explained she and her late husband went into business and made a great deal of money from construction contracts. With the discovery of her past, Mystique was now bent on tracing her family tree. She offered to pay for Todds hospital expenses and take guardianship of him while he was serving time, something both he and the courts readily accepted. Todd's mother also agreed to this, noting that her circumstances were quite restricted and that Todd had improved greatly when Lech was able to supply the time and money to provide the tutoring and activities that kept him out of trouble.
Mystique put him back in school, and immediately he just barely escaped trouble when he was caught going through the jacket of Duncan Mathews at the Burger Joint. The Bayville High football captain and his buddies were celebrating a good practice with burgers and cokes when a linebacker noticed Todds activities. Only his desire to not cause a scene while his teammates were all in a good mood kept Todd from having his face smashed in then and there. That all changed that very night when Tolansky was seen going through the stands picking pockets at the homecomming game. The three on one fight was stopped short when Scott intervened, but his costume malfunction ignited a propane tank and caused a near disaster.
Mystique asked Todd to try and talk to Scott, see if he could learn more about him and "do lunch", but they turned out to be cool to each other. She later "recruited" him to spy on the Institute and see what he could learn there. He got involved in a fight with Nightcrawler, but was unable to remember any of the details due to a mindwipe by professor Xavier. It did not erase everything, however: he knew, just knew the next (and to him the first) time he met Nightcrawler that he felt an instant dislike for him. All Mystique could learn was from the scorch marks on Todd's uniform: whatever defenses the Institute had, they were good. Todd vividly remembers, however what happened the next day at the Brotherhood house:
Todd stood there, transfixed, a glass of water in one hand and a pair of aspirin from the upstairs bathroom in the other as he heard Mystique talking to herself from her closed and locked room. Sometimes she would talk to herself, venting out her weekly frustrations.. He had caught her doing it once, with her door open, and then she glared at him and with a pointed finger sternly told him to be on his way.
"...got your message, Charles, no more sending boys to do Mystiques dirty work, I'll come myself. And when I'm done". She paused for just the barest of moments. "I'll know all your little secrets, I'll turn everyone against each you, and I promise that I won't leave two stones of your precious mansion standing next to each other. No one makes a fool of me" Mystique raised her voice. "You're FINISHED Charles, you just don't know it yet". She lowered her voice again, threateningly, and calmly stated "And I willl be there when it happens".
Toad quietly padded down the stairs, turning out of sight just as Mystique slammed the door open and glared down the empty hallway
Things got pretty intense at the brotherhood house around the time Rogue showed up, and Todd kept a very low profile for several weeks. He got along well with Lance when he came in, and made fast friends with Fred Dukes. Mystique ran a tight ship and was constantly on everyone to train and work as a team, and this only meshed everyone into each others lives all the more.
Todd didn't like the strict discipline and constant drills, although he found the exercise useful. He didn't like the "Clean room policy" and the countless tasks and chores they were assigned every week. He did, however, welcome the stability it bought to his life and it was cool the way his powers were developing, so he stayed out of trouble. More to the point, he was too scared not to stay out of trouble.
Then one day Rogue found a "vape ray", Forge's Transdimensional Tranducer. It was shiney. It vaporized things. It had cool effects. What more could a 16 year old boy ask for? He instantly repayed Mystique's clean room policy with his own clean office policy, throwing her car in to boot. Chased by the X-Men who were intently trying to free Kurt from the pocket dimension the transducer had put him in, Todd gave up the device and went to get Lance and Fred to even the score. In the ensuing fight, Nightcrawler returned along with Forge, and the device was destroyed.
Mystique was able to talk the police into reporting her car as stolen; insurance gave her a loaner car for the rest of the week and paid off all but $1999.98 of the outstanding loan...to which Todd offered to "put in his 2 cents worth by saying she got off lucky". This was not the most well timed remark, as she casually informed him in her own must uniquely persuasive style that he would be contributing much more than 2 cents.
Mystique was in a particularly foul mood for some time after Rogue's defection, and Todd almost welcomed the three months of Saturday detention he faced as payback for his mischief. It might have been boring and kept him from sleeping in, but it did allowed him some time away from Mystique and it helped him to mentally decompress.
Later that year Todd and the rest of the brotherhood team team went on a survival challenge course as part of a school competition, which showcased both the Brotherhood's and Institute's teamwork. After a fiercly competitive climb up Mount Humiliation. the two groups joined together to defeat Professor Xavier's brother Cain (Juggernaut) who had escaped the Stokes County Maximum Security Facility with Mystique's assistance. Showing no gratitude to family or ally, he was about to kill them both when the two teams intervened at the institute.
When Trask and Magneto were doing their thing to put mutants into the spotlight, Todd fell in lust love with Wanda and began stalking courting her with ... predictable results. Nevertheless, a sort of truce and acceptance was gained after he and Nightcrawler rescued her from Magneto's lair, no doubt thanks in part to Magneto's manipulation of her memories via Mastermind.
Finally, at the end of the series when Apocolypse started his campaign of intensive overcompensation writ on a global scale, Todd joined the rest of the Brotherhood in helping to defeat him, in his own small way.
Sample Post: As Toad and Nightcralwer went fly at a wall suddenly they were on the other side of it and they crashed into a light pole and landed on the ground with a thud. “ I'm no going down this time blue freak!” Toad said getting to his feet and grabbing the downed blue devil with his tongue and threw him into a wall…
