"It was just a hypothetical question," Scott responded. He wasn't even sure Apocalypse could help Ray for sure...or that he'd take in any mutant Scott ran into on the street. He worried about over-playing his cards as well, a screw up and he'd be in trouble with Apocalypse...no doubt about it. He didn't want to think about what the punishment might be, the best course of action would be to avoid it all together. "I was just curious, I mean, that's a question that's run through my head for years."

Ray just studied him, watching Scott lie was an easy thing to witness. He'd never really been good at it, but then again, Ray just had a knack for reading body language; "uh-huh..." Ray said as if that was it, and he started to sit back down.
Then in a flash he reached over and snatched the glasses off of Scott's head, jumping back and half-wondering if he should duck.

Years of dealing with uncontrolled eyebeams Scott's eyes closed on reflex, but he knew the tell-tale red beam was absent. Ray probably noticed too...the kid was observant...that and you'd notice a destructive red beam coming towards your head. Scott let his head rest on his closed fists, one over each eye, elbows resting on his knees, not because he was trying to lie his way out of this one but because he'd screwed up and was waiting for the verbal blow. The pressure on his eyes felt reassuring somehow, he had covered his eyes with his fists enough times when he'd actually had to, now it was just a comforting gesture. Scott didn't know any way he could verbally talk his way out of this one. He sat there, waiting for the verbal ax to strike.
((I knew you'd do that, just knew it! And Scott can't help that he's not a good liar, it's been beaten out of him.))

(( ;D i'm just slick like that lol. and hey, not everyone can be a good liar. it comes with years of practice lol))
Ray just stared, slightly shocked he'd actually caught Scott Summers in a verbal fumble. But mostly surprised he hadn't had to dodge anything. At all. There wasn't even an ominous red glow.
"You... You really got it fixed," he said, the hand that held the glasses lowering. He didn't know what to say. It'd always been a topic of the Recruits, whether or not if Scott would ever see for real and Rogue would ever touch and Kurt would ever be fuzz-free. But there Scott was...
"Have you been 'cured' or something?" Ray asked with a little laugh, though it was weak and soft. He was still shocked.

"Yeah, I really got it fixed..."Scott muttered into his hands. He rubbed his face before looking up at Ray. "It's not a cure...not really. I mean, I still got the optic blasts they're just...controlled now." He got up from the bench holding out his hand. "Can I have my shades back? They've got sentimental value."

Wordlessly, Ray nodded and handed him his shades, then he got possibly too close as he looked at Scott's actual eyes; "By god, you do have pupils!" he joked with mock-amazement once he'd pulled back, smirking; "But Geez, does anyone else know?"

Scott burst out laughing at Ray's exclamation. He had to admit, he'd worried about having pupils too. He sobered at the second question and shook his head. "No, no one knows...well, no, that's not true, Kurt knows too. But no one else. And I'd like to keep it that way if you don't mind." He twisted his shades in his hands, trying to determine how much he could actually tell Ray, considering he hadn't planned on letting anyone in on the secret.

Ray rolled his eyes; "Scott, I know who really killed JFK," he said; "Does anyone else?" his one eyebrow was raised for a moment, then, he laughed; "But seriously, I won't tell. Why would I?"
He was quiet for a while then; "So... did you get some surgery in Mexico?" he joked; "Or did someone really qualified help you out?"

"I don't think the every day surgeon could have helped me out..." He was having an inner war with his better judgement. Ray was gonna freak if he found out the secret benefactor was Apocalypse but on the other hand he'd seen through his earlier lies. Why couldn't I be a better liar, he silently asked, why is lying so difficult? It's just an abstracted truth... "The guy's qualified," Scott continued, "he's got at least a thousand years under his belt..."

Ray was about to laugh, then, he froze. He stared at Scott, then, looked away; "Well hot d**n..." he murmured, running a hand through his spikes and keeping it on the back of his head. He turned and walked away, letting it sink in. He wanted to freak, but he knew it wouldn't get him anywhere, and he and Scott were having an actual conversation.
Finally, he looked at Scott; "What'd you give him in return? Your soul?" he asked in a strained voice. He hadn't freaked, but he wasn't joking. Apolcalypse had a high price attatched to his "miracles".

Scott was surprised at the good front Ray was putting on. He knew the guy had to be freaking on the inside, especially when he heard the strain in his voice. "My loyalty," he replied. He knew it was true, too. No matter what happened Apocalypse had him wrapped around one of his ancient fingers, despite all Xavier had done for him and the loyalty he had felt at one point it had been pushed into the background, his loyalty lay somewhere else. "I know it sounds stupid, hell, my actions were stupid," his voice escalated, "but if I could take it all back I...I don't know that I would. Plus...it wasn't a choice...not exactly." His voice dropped down and he quietly continued, " I could have been a martyr for Xavier's cause...but I chose life instead. Does that sound stupid to you?"

"Hell no," Ray said; "You looked out for number one, can't blame you at all," he mumbled, his other hand joining the other as he looked away again.
After a moment, Ray tried to shift the subject; "So... what's the guy like?" Ray asked. "Besides old and covered with moth balls," he laughed.

A weight lifted as he heard Ray say he hadn't been crazy for looking after his own interests. He laughed at the mothball comment. "Well...he's big, blue...likes to use belittling terms like 'my child' but the Prof does that too so I guess it's just a mentor thing...not that I'd call him a mentor. He's actually not that bad, now that I think about it. Tougher training sessions than Logan though..." His eyes took on a glazed look as he thought about his time in the labyrinth, it still haunted him. Scott shook his head, snapping himself out of it.
"He seems to actually care about mutants...not like the Prof who's all about making sure we get along best we can. Apocalypse is more focused on the well-being of mutant-kind as a whole. But not in the crazy Magneto way."

"Um.... he about took out the whole world Scott," Ray said; "But then again, Magneto would probably try that if he could.... You know what, though, dude?" he paused; "Right now, right here, as of yesterday and today, we've basically been chess peices for a couple of old guys playing in a tournament trying to beat each other out. I can see why you'd want your eyes fixed. I can see wanting to live...
"But I can't see how you could handle being a pawn. Or a Bishop, or a Knight. No matter what you are, you're just a playing peice. And have you seen Harry Potter? Chess is violent, man!" he shuddered, then realized he'd been rambling; "Crap, I was rambling, wasn't I?" he sighed.
"I just don't know why we're not just looking out for each other and not all these old super-mutants," he finished finally; "Though having an alliance with Apocalypse will probably have its perks in the future."

"Yeah, you were rambling. I get where you're coming from though." He shrugged. "I don't see myself as a pawn, though. In my own chess game I'm not a pawn at all. Sure, I play at being a pawn in someone else's game but every person has their own game to play. Just becasue I'm a pawn to one super power or the next doesn't mean that's what I am. In my personal chess game they get stupid labels too."
Scott reached down to pick up a stone and cast it into the pond. "I just hope I live through all of this to someday have a life of my own."
